Scott’s SDA Journey: Finding Independence

For many people living with disability, the dream of achieving independence can often feel distant. But for Scott, a recent journey with Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Enliven Housing has made that dream a reality. 

“Knowing that I was able to come and go as I pleased, and if I wanted to go down to the shops or spend time with friends or whatever the case may be. Knowing that I could do that now with complete freedom was just amazing”

For Scott to accept his job offer of a lifetime, he had to battle the private rental market to secure a place to stay. He settled there for over three years until he decided he needed a more suitable arrangement. “As much as I enjoyed my original place where I was living, it wasn’t completely accessible”, Scott shares. This is when Scott was introduced to SDA Funding; Funding provided by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that can assist participants like Scott with the cost of accommodation. Enliven was able to ensure Scott had a smooth transition from going to his old apartment to his new one. From the eligibility assessment to the day you get your keys, Enliven works with tenants every step of the way. 

Scott’s new accommodation not only gave him freedom but also financial independence. “Having SDA funding meant that I would be able to be financially independent and financially free from my parents,” Scott shares. This transition not only allowed him to manage his own finances but also gave Scott the autonomy to dictate his choices without always needing to rely on others. This independence has provided the foundation for building a life of his own. 

With his new living arrangement, Scott not only found freedom in the present, but also gained peace of mind about his future. He describes how settling into his new home gave him the opportunity to slow down and reflect on his long-term goals and future.

“Now having SDA and really settling into it, it not only has given me peace of mind but it has really given me the opportunity to really stop, think, and plan for the first time in a long time about what my life may actually look like”

The ability to pause, plan, and look ahead without constant worry or uncertainty has allowed Scott to imagine a future full of possibility. 

 “To know that my partner has been able to move in with me, it’s just been amazing. To be able to spend that time together in a place that we’re both comfortable in, and that we can both enjoy as well”.

Reflecting on his experience with Enliven Housing, Scott is grateful he had the backing of a tenant-centric organisation we he needed it most. “They really came into my life at a time when I really needed someone in my corner and to back me. I don’t think Enliven Housing will ever truly know just how life changing and just how incredible it has been for me”.
