For many people living with disability, the road to independence means finding the right place to call home, a place that supports not only daily needs but future dreams. For Megan, that place was with our Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA), giving her the freedom to live her life the way she wanted and pursue a future she once felt was out of reach.
“I decided I wanted to leave Tamworth where I was because there was nothing for me to do there. It really wasn’t set up for me. I decided to move to Sydney because I wanted to improve my life and give me more things to do and achieve things,” Megan shares.
That move wasn’t just about a change in location, it was about opening new doors. “I’m going to be getting into acting and just experiencing things that I’ve never experienced before. That was my main reason of coming to Sydney because Tamworth was very restrictive for me”, shared Megan.
With a desire to build a life that was truly her own, Megan turned to the internet to explore her options. That’s when she discovered Enliven Housing. “I just looked at what they had available, and I saw this place in Kogarah, and I just went for it.”
From the beginning, Megan found Enliven to be a supportive partner in her transition. “They were very helpful and very open to what my needs were. They were very friendly and very keen to help me with what I needed. They showed me many options, but this place that I have now is the best place that I’ve ever come across.”
Kogarah struck the perfect balance for Megan. Her home was close to the city bust nestled in a quiet, accessible neighbourhood. “It’s very easy to get around. Everything is within proximity of where I’m at”.
Since moving in, Megan has found that her new apartment gives her more than just a roof over her head – it gives her freedom.
“Being in the apartment, it allows me to further my independence. It allows me to live my life the way I want to live. Whether I want to stay home, whether I want to go out, whether I want to meet friends – I can do that without any problems whatsoever. I don’t have to ask permission to go somewhere, which is most important because you’re old enough to look after yourself.”
Now, Megan is embracing the possibilities of her new chapter. She’s completing a diploma in Event Management and is ready to dive into a whole new world of creativity and connection.
“I’m finishing off a diploma of Event Management at the moment, and I’m planning to expand that into the world of acting and just find my niche in that world.”
Sydney has become the stage where Megan can explore her passions, build a future and finally feel at home. “It allows me to spread my wings a bit and get out of myself and get out of my own head… I’m going to be getting into acting and just experiencing things that I’ve never experienced before.”
After years of travel and uncertainty, Megan has found the stability she longed for – a home where she can grow roots and look confidently to the future. “I couldn’t be happier with the way things are now. I’m here for the duration, basically. I’m not intending to leave… I wanted a place where I could put roots down – so I think I’ve found it.”
